It’s no secret that lions are at the top of the food chain on the African savannaBetween their majestic manes and mighty roars, it’s clear that they possess incredible power and ferocity. In fact, one particular lion at the Lincoln Park zoo in Chicago has a particularly impressive roar that he loves to show off to visitors.

But zoo guests aren’t the only ones impressed with his epic roar.

Lion Roar

Multiple times per day, a proud, mighty lion climbs atop a tall rock and commands the attention of everyone within a five-mile radius. How does he do that exactly? Well, with his extremely impressive roar.

“I have visited him many times. He was born in captivity and can’t be released into the wild. He was born a circus lion and later abandoned. He likes his home and seems to love to perform. He roars on his rock several times a day. I remember a local report on him during quarantine that he was acting depressed and was one of their animals that were confused and upset about losing their audiences,” said a regular zoo visitor.

Lions have the loudest roars of all the “big cats.” Amazingly, the thunderous, guttural sound of a lion’s roar can resonate for multiple miles. In the wild, lions use their roars to warn potential intruders and protect their territory and their pride.

While this particular lion was born in captivity, he still loves to show off his skills.

“You don’t truly understand just how loud this is until you hear it in person. Even from a distance like this, it sounds like the roar is coming from every direction around you, and you feel it in your chest,” said an enthusiastic visitor.

One impressed onlooker captured a video of his extremely epic roar, and once the short clip was shared on social media, it earned over 20 million views.

Lion Laying

The video begins with the lion standing on top of a tall rock in his enclosure, and you can hear him begin to bellow his mighty roar. After a while, his roaring turns to chuffing, and then he finishes. As he surveys his surroundings, impressed onlookers give him a much-earned round of applause. Then, the mighty lion lays down like it is no big deal at all, and he’s satisfied with his performance.

You can experience the epic roar for yourself in the video below.
