Harold, a puppy born into the harsh conditions of a puppy mill, faced a difficult start in life. These mills, notorious for confining mother dogs to cramped cages, produce thousands of puppies primarily for profit, often disregarding the health and well-being of the animals. As a result, puppies like Harold are at a significantly higher risk of inheriting severe congenital disorders, including heart and kidney diseases, blood disorders, deafness, and even permanent paralysis. Shortly after his birth, Harold was sold for $7,000 to an unsuspecting buyer at a pet store.
Initially, his new owner cared for him through a bout of an upper respiratory infection. However, Harold’s health quickly deteriorated when he lost the use of his back legs due to spinal curvature, a condition akin to scoliosis caused by the excessive overbreeding practices of the puppy mill. This condition robbed him of all sensation in his hindquarters. He needed costly surgery, and after spending $7,000 to purchase him, his owner was in an impossible situation.
Feeling overwhelmed by Harold’s increasing needs, his owner surrendered him to Dallas DoggRRR. The organization immediately rushed him to an emergency animal hospital. Harold’s condition was grave; he spent two days struggling to eat without regurgitating his food. The veterinary team conducted emergency exploratory surgery, revealing multiple health issues: ulcerations and a stricture in his intestines, abdominal adhesions, swollen lymph nodes, elevated liver values, and gastro fluid spread through his abdomen and esophagus.
The rescue group didn’t hesitate and provided Harold with the necessary care so he could flourish. Despite Harold’s challenges, the pup has been with Dallas DoggRRR for years and will remain with them indefinitely. He serves as a social media ambassador, symbolizing resilience and strength. The rescue group says, “This little guy is truly a fighter.”
