Deputy Brian Bowling of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s department has witnessed dogs injured by gunfire before, but never on U.S. soil. The former military flight medic who served in Afghanistan just happened to be at the right place at the right time when Hayley Miller’s foster dog Ginger was shot in the head by a callous neighbor.

Bowling saw Ginger stumble into the road towards him, bleeding profusely. If not for his medical training, quick thinking and kind heart, Ginger would not be alive today.

He rushed her to the vet for emergency treatment. When Miller arrived she was informed by the staff that Ginger required expensive surgery that Miller could not afford. She was preparing to make the devastating decision to euthanize the sweet Pit Bull when Deputy Bowling stepped up to save her life once again. He pulled out his credit card and paid Ginger’s $2,500 vet bill.

Ginger survived the surgery and began her long recovery back in the comfort of Miller’s home, her tail wagging all the way. Unfortunately the neighbor who shot Ginger cannot be charged with a crime in Arizona because the dog was on his property at the time.

Miller has decided not to focus on the negative, but rather the amazing gift she and Ginger have been given by Sheriff’s Deputy Bowling – twice! She said via her Facebook page,

The story is crazy… but it’s really not about how my neighbor shot my dog. It’s about this amazing Sheriff that found her and what happened after that.

A GoFundMe page created to help Miller pay Deputy Bowling back has raised an astonishing $6,400. The remaining funds will be put towards Ginger’s ongoing care.
