Brief History on Siberian Husky Origin
Up until the 1900s, Americans had never heard about these incredible Siberian sled dogs. The Siberian Husky was brought over to Alaska in the year 1909. This particular breed originated in northeastern Asia among the Chukchi people, who utilized them as endurance sled dogs. When environmental conditions began to change, these semi-nomadic natives were forced to expand their hunting grounds and methods. They adapted to these changes by developing a resilient breed of sled dog, which met their special requirements upon which their survival depended. The breed gained AKC recognition in 1930, and the Siberian Husky Club of America was founded in 1938. To date, the Siberian Husky is one of the most popular arctic breeds to keep as a pet. Many households across America have opted to have one as a part of their family.
Siberian Husky Breed Appearance
The Husky is of medium build, and makes a wonderful first impression with it’s outstanding coloring and appearance. The moderately compact body, abundance of fur, erect ears and brush tail truly suggest its northern heritage. This breed is the prime example of endurance, speed and strength. The Husky can have various eye colors, most often times blue or brown, and even sometimes one of each. This breed has a mischievous yet friendly expression. The medium length coat features a soft, dense undercoat and a straight outer coat, usually with pronounced markings on the head. The coat of the Husky can come in a large variety of colors. Such as white, saddleback, sable, agouti, light red, copper, silver & white, wolf grey, grey, black and white, and black.
Siberian Husky Breed Temperament
This breed is know to be stubborn and independent while at the same time having a friendly, playful personality. It enjoys the company of other dogs greatly, but its high-prey drive can cause it to chase cats and livestock. If socialized at an early age, this will not be a problem. The Husky tends to roam and explore if left of the leash. Other unwanted habits include howling, digging, and excessive chewing. It is a faithful, intelligent breed that will make a wonderful addition to any family.
Siberian Husky Breed Maintenance
The Husky will require brushing about once or twice a week, and more during its shedding season. Clip its nails often and bathe only when necessary to prevent the skin from losing its natural oils. This breed is considered to be very active, and must be exercised daily to prevent boredom or frustrated and destructive behaviors. It enjoys a nice run, especially in cold weather. It should be noted that Huskies should not be exercised too much in warmer weather. This breed can live outdoors in cold climates, however it is happier with open access to the home. This breed should not live outdoors in hot or warm climates. This dog needs patience and consistency in training, and will obey as long as they can understand the point of the command.
