Newfoundlands are known as being amazing search and rescue dogs. They are also known for being adept swimmers (they have webbed toes!).
In September 2007 at Lake Iseo, Italy, a group of Newfoundland dogs graduated from the Italian Dog Rescue School.
They were the world’s first airborne dog rescue team. The founder of the school, Ferrucio Pilenga had taught his own dog to rescue people, back in 1988 when the idea for the dog air crew was born.
It takes three years of training before a dog can make a helicopter rescue.
Now, many agencies use air born rescue dogs to aid in water rescues. The following images are from the Coast Guard, who also use Newfoundlands due to their strong ability as swimmers. These images are of a practice rescue with a Newfie in training – we think he looks amazing!
It’s amazing what these dogs can do – would you feel safer if a dog came to your rescue? Tell us in the comments!
