Carlos Aranda, a seasoned military dog handler, and Military Training Dog Donnie spent three formative years together in Norfolk, Virginia. Aranda, who was relatively new to the field when he first met Donnie, credits the dog with teaching him invaluable lessons that shaped his career.
“In the Navy, when you’re a new handler, you don’t have much experience,” Aranda shared. “They pair you with a dog who knows the ropes, one who’s been through multiple handlers and understands the job inside and out. Donnie was that dog for me. He really helped me become the handler I am today, showing me the ropes in ways I never expected. It’s crazy to think that a dog could teach a human so much, but that’s exactly what he did.”
Aranda’s deep connection with Donnie only strengthened over the years, and their time together in Norfolk was marked by numerous successful missions. Donnie, a skilled and highly trained military working dog, was instrumental in conducting thousands of sweeps for explosives, ensuring the safety of military personnel and civilians alike. However, their partnership was temporarily interrupted when Aranda was restationed to Lemoore Naval Air Station last year, leaving Donnie behind in Norfolk.
