An adventurous mixed-breed dog owes his life to heroic and dedicated Vancouver Police Constable, Peter Colenutt. Nearby witnesses contacted officers after seeing the dog plunge through the ice at Stanley Park’s Lost Lagoon.
It is believed the pooch chased a ball onto the frozen surface and became stranded by the floating ice chunks after breaking through.
When officers arrived, Constable Colenutt stripped off his coat, shoes and socks and waded into the icy water wearing nothing but his short-sleeved uniform. Upon reaching the exhausted pup, Colenutt grabbed hold of his scruff and eased him around the ice flows using a rescue rope.

The heroic officer then made his way back to his squad car – sopping wet and barefoot – through the snow. Photos of the dramatic scene appeared on Twitter earning over a thousand likes, shares and grateful comments. Vancouver Police tweeted:
“The dog and our officer were both pretty chilly, but thankfully okay.”

It turns out Constable Colenutt is no stranger to water rescues. Just last week he received the Chief Constable’s Commendation for rescuing a swimmer in distress last June – under much warmer conditions, of course!
Reports say that the dog is doing well, however no more information has been released about how he came to be chasing a ball onto thin ice and whether or not he has an owner. Early reports initially stated the dog chased a bird onto the frozen lagoon, but it was later confirmed that the object was a ball.
