An announcement on October 27th, 2023, confirmed that another dog food company had to recall their products due to Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is one of the most common reasons for dog food recalls, and pulling contaminated products is crucial because they can affect both the pets and humans in your household.
Which Products Were Recalled?
Blue Ridge Beef, a reputable raw pet food manufacturer, recalled their 2-pound packages of Breeders Choice Raw Pet Food. The recalled products have the following details: Lot# 8/2/24 UPC 8 54298 00193 1. This food comes in clear, tube-like packaging.
The food was voluntarily recalled due to confirmed Salmonella contamination. Luckily, there are no reported illnesses related to the recall. No other products or lot codes are affected by this recall.
This lot of food was distributed to stores from August 9th, 2023, to August 25th, 2023. The company sold the packages to retail stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
The Dangers of Salmonella Contamination
Both humans and dogs can be affected by Salmonella, so if your dog eats the contaminated food, they could make your human family members sick too. Coming into contact with the affected product could also cause you to feel ill.
Dogs infected with Salmonella may experience vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, fever, and decreased appetite. However, healthy dogs could still carry the bacteria and pass it on to others. If your dog shows any unusual symptoms after eating an infected product, contact your vet right away.
Symptoms of Salmonella in humans are similar to dogs: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In extreme cases, it could lead to arthritis, muscle pain, endocarditis, arterial infections, eye irritations, or urinary infections. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is advised to seek medical attention.
What to Do with the Recalled Products
If you have a recalled product, make sure you safely dispose of it in a way that no humans, pets, or wildlife can access it. Then, clean any surfaces that the food touched, such as bowls, counters, and storage containers. Thoroughly wash your hands afterward. Never sell or donate these products since that will only put other people and animals at risk.
You can email Blue Ridge Beef at blueridgebeefnc@yahoo.com to get a full refund. You can also call the company at 704-880-4500 on Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
If anyone in your home came into contact with the food, keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms and seek medical help if needed. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially with pets since they can’t tell you what’s wrong.
