The FDA tested samples of Viva raw dog food after a customer complained that their samples tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. Both can lead to illness in pets and humans, so the affected products were quickly recalled. Pets harmed by the recalled food may experience symptoms of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and lethargy. Humans may experience similar symptoms, such as nausea, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. In rare cases, these symptoms could lead to more serious conditions, so please seek medical attention if you or your pet get sick after coming into contact with this food.
It’s crucial to stay on top of your furry friend’s health, so if you feed your dog Viva, check to make sure the food you currently have isn’t affected.
Which Products Were Recalled?
Viva recalled Lot 22853. This included Viva Duck for Dogs (Ground), Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked), Viva Duck for Cats, and Viva Pure Duck (for cats and dogs). No other Viva products were affected by this recall.
The recalled lot was shipped to customers from 10/24/2023 to 12/6/2023. The product that a customer complained about was Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked). Viva has already taken action to find the root of the problem and ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
“We have conducted a detailed root-cause analysis in our USDA facility to ensure we continue to exceed the highest industry food safety standards & will continue to push the boundaries for how safe, fresh pet food is made,” Viva wrote.
What to Do with the Recalled Products
If you feed your dog Viva, check your products for the recalled lot code. For anyone who still has these products in their home, Viva is asking them to fill out this response form. Then, the company will reach out to provide a refund.
Make sure you dispose of the food in a way that no humans or animals can access it. When handling the food, it’s best to wear gloves to ensure the food doesn’t touch your skin. Place the food in a sealed plastic bag before discarding it just to be safe. Thoroughly wash anything the food might have come into contact with, such as countertops, storage containers, measuring cups, and bowls. Never sell or donate the recalled food.
