Many pet parents have switched from kibble to frozen raw dog food for its healthier ingredients. But sadly, all dog foods can still get recalled. Bravo Packing, Inc. voluntarily recalled two of their frozen formulas after samples tested positive for salmonella and listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Both of these could have a huge impact on the health of humans and dogs. So, if you have the affected recipes, please dispose of them right away.

Staying on top of dog food recalls is the perfect way to keep everyone in your household healthy. So, here’s what you need to know about this recent recall.

What Was Recalled?

On March 3rd, 2021, Bravo Packing, Inc. voluntarily recalled all of their Performance Dog and Ground Beef packages. These are frozen raw foods that usually come in 2-pound or 5-pound plastic sleeves. Despite having a similar name, this company has no relation to Bravo Pet Foods.

When the FDA examined samples of Performance Dog and Ground Beef, both tested positive for salmonella and listeria monocytogenes. So, all of this food should be disposed of out of caution. Bravo Packing, Inc. is based in New Jersey, but they ship to retailers and consumers nationwide.

Dangers of Salmonella and Listeria Monocytogenes

Both of these bacteria can harm humans and animals. They can even be passed on from surfaces the food touches, along with the saliva and feces of an infected pet. Dogs who ate the food may experience lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some animals could be infected without showing symptoms.

For humans, salmonella can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and fever. In rare occasions, it can cause arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, eye irritation, muscle pain, and urinary tract infections.

Listeria monocytogenes often causes short-term symptoms, such as severe headaches, high fever, nausea, stiffness, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In extreme cases, it could cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. This bacteria could even be fatal for humans with weakened immune systems, such as young children and elderly people.

If you or your dog are showing any of the above symptoms after being exposed to this food, contact your vet and/or health care professional immediately.

What Should You Do with Affected Food?

Families with Performance Dog or Ground Beef from Bravo Packing, Inc. should throw them away immediately. Dispose of the food in a place where no humans, pets, or wild animals can access it.

Additionally, wipe down any surfaces that the food might’ve touched. This includes counters, bowls, and containers. Keep an eye out for symptoms from all your family members, and don’t hesitate to seek help if unusual symptoms arise.
