It’s better to be safe than sorry. Pet food company Sunshine Mills, Inc. is issuing another voluntary recall for its lines of dog food. No illnesses have been reported, but some of the food tested positive for salmonella. So, they pulled four brands off the shelves.

In 2020, Sunshine Mills experienced a massive recall for aflatoxin contamination. Some of the brands in the new recall were also affected in the previous recall. So, if you serve your dog any products from this company, be extra cautious.

How Can Salmonella Affect Your Dog?

Salmonella in dog food can be harmful to both pets and people. Dogs who get salmonella from the food could experience lethargy, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or a decreased appetite. However, dogs can also appear healthy, but still carry salmonella.

Humans who have handled the food could have symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or abdominal cramping. In more extreme cases, people could experience muscle pain, arthritis, arterial infections, endocarditis, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections.

If you or your dog show any signs of a salmonella infection, please talk to a medical professional right away.

What to Do Next

If you have any of the affected products in your home, stop using them immediately. You may be able to return the unused portion of the food to your place of purchase for a refund.

Make sure you wipe down anything that the infected product might have touched, including counters, bowls, flooring, and containers. Thoroughly wash your hands after every time you handle dog food.

If you’d like additional information on this recall, you can call Sunshine Mills at (800) 705-2111 from 7 am to 4pm on Monday through Friday. You can also email them at customer.service@sunshinemills.com.
