A chain of Minnesota stores known as Woody’s Pet Food Deli carries some of their own pet food recipes. Their raw food always has a warning about the potential concerns of harmful bacteria, but it’s uncommon for that to occur.
The company recently found Salmonella in a sample of raw dog food, causing them to recall a limited number of products. They’ve been upfront and honest about the recall to ensure that all customers stay safe. So, which products have been recalled, and what should you do if you have one?
Which Products were Recalled?
Woody’s Pet Food Deli recalled their Raw Cornish Hen formula with supplements. The 5-pound plastic tubs have a PLU code of 5230, and the 15-ounce containers have a PLU code of 1652. The containers all have green stickers that say “with supplements,” and white stickers to show the expiration date. Both sizes have an expiration date of 11/20/2022.
The products were only sold at the company’s three Minnesota stores, which are in Minneapolis, Woodbury, and Saint Paul. Only 14 of the affected containers have been sold. The recall was caused after a consumer complained. Then, the company tested their products and found Salmonella in the Cornish Hen formula.
How Does Salmonella Affect Humans and Pets?
Pets infected with Salmonella could experience diarrhea, fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain. If your dog displays any unusual symptoms after eating this food, contact your vet right away.
Dogs can carry Salmonella without showing symptoms, which could affect humans. People can also get infected by coming into contact with the recalled products. Humans could experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. In extreme cases, these symptoms could lead to arterial infections, arthritis, endocarditis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections.
Washing your hands and cleaning surfaces after handling pet food is the best way to avoid putting yourself and others at risk. If any of these symptoms occur, alert a medical professional.
What to Do with the Recalled Products
Anyone who has the affected products is urged to stop using them right away. They can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Always wash your hands after handling pet food.
Once the product has been disposed of, it’s a good idea to clean any surfaces that it could’ve touched, such as counters, refrigerator shelves, and containers. Animals could pass salmonella bacteria through feces, so it’s extra important to clean up after your dog outside to keep others safe.
