The Humane Society of West Michigan in Grand Rapids, MI is one of the shelters that have received support from Rescue Rebuild through Greater Good. Thanks to their help, the dogs they care for are happier and healthier while waiting for their forever homes.
“Playpens for dogs are essential for their health and attitude. Dogs who do not get to run and play and release all of their pent-up energy can become overly excited or even depressed, making them less likely to be adopted. The solution is to not only give them an outdoor playpen but to give them toys or obstacles that will keep their mind stimulated while they play. Having dealt with this problem before, Rescue Rebuild knew exactly what to do.’
“First, the 2 – 100’ x 20’ pens needed to be regraded level again. Due to years of rain, the floors were eroding and uneven. After the grading came new artificial turf. This will keep the ground underneath from eroding and reduce heat and fatigue on paws. Next, to finish off the outdoor pens, the team installed agility steps, tire tunnels and slalom pegs. Now the dogs will have the opportunity not only to play, but be mentally stimulated. Rescue Rebuild not only worked on the outside, but the shelter received new paint on the inside and new sound deadening baffles inside of the dog kennels.”
“Whenever we meet a dog’s needs, they are far more adoptable than when we do not: whether it’s exercise, stimulation, consistency or companionship, small steps can be taken to eventually meet all of their needs. This was a big step in completing this goal. The outcome was a substantial increase in adoptions!”
