Shelter dogs don’t choose to be overlooked as they wait for loving homes. This is the reality they face, and it’s our responsibility to make sure these deserving animals are given a fair chance. Healthy puppies are typically the most sought-after, and one young dog felt this unfortunate truth all too deeply. Despite being young and possessing a gentle, loving personality, she was continually passed over by adopters who gravitated toward smaller, younger puppies instead of considering her as their future companion.

Sade was around two years old when she was rescued from life as a thin, wandering stray and brought to the Humane Society of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Despite her young age, Sade had already left her puppy days behind and seemed to have missed out on being truly loved.

What Sade needed most was another shot at happiness. The shelter staff ensured she was as comfortable as possible while she waited, hoping that someone special would notice her. But Sade’s journey to find a family was not without challenges.

In the kennel beside her, adoptable puppies garnered much of the attention—often seen as more desirable companions by many prospective adopters. “Sadly, this is the reality for many adult dogs,” the shelter shared. “While the puppies get adopted quickly, our wonderful adult dogs can wait months to find a family.”

Sade felt this reality deeply, watching as puppies were chosen and taken home to start new lives. It left her with the looming question: how long would she be overlooked? Thankfully, Sade wouldn’t have to wonder much longer.

Within days after her story appeared online, a family, who had met her while volunteering at the shelter, decided to adopt her. “This sweet girl, who won over the hearts of so many online, has found her forever home,” the shelter announced joyfully. They added, “Sade has settled in almost immediately in her new home. Happy tails, Sade!”

Sade’s story highlights a struggle faced by many adult and senior dogs. While puppies often find homes quickly, older dogs can spend weeks, months, or even years waiting for someone to give them a chance. And though puppies are undeniably lovable, adult dogs bring a world of unique joy and loyalty to those willing to welcome them.
