#1 – Afghan Hound
This elegant breed is considered to have descended directly from ancient dog types, although the common dog we see today typically goes back to dogs brought over to Great Britain in the 1920’s.

The Akita is one of Japan’s oldest native breeds, and is found in many areas of Japan’s history.=
#3 – Basenji
The Basenji is arguable the most ancient breed in the world today. In fact, dogs resembling the Basenji can be seen in sculptures in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs.
#4 – Chinese Shar-Pei
Although the Shar-Pei now looks very different from the original, called “Bone-mouthed” Shar Pei (that can still be found in China), this breed has been seen in pictures on pottery dating back to 206 BCE.
#5 – Chow Chow
Researchers believe this fluffy breed is one of the first to evolve from the wolf – and recent DNA studies have potentially confirmed this hypothesis.
#6 – Pekingese
This small breed is over 2,000 years old, and it has changed very little over that time.
#7 – Saluki
The Saluki is up against the Basenji for one of the oldest breeds. This beautiful dog has been found in rock art dating back to 10,000 BC. They were considered to be the “Royal Dog of Egypt.”
#8 – Samoyed
Samoyeds have been used for sledding, guarding, and herding for over 3,000 years.
#9 – Shih Tzu
Although not recognized by the American Kennel Club until 1969, the Shih Tzu is descended from dogs dating back to 800 BC.
#10 – Tibetan Terrier
Tibetan Terriers were kept as a pure breed for over 2,000 years, simply due to the geographically isolated location of Tibet. The first Tibetan Terrier to come to Europe wasn’t until 1922.
