The 12 Best Lap Dog Breeds

| September 5, 2015

Are you looking for a dog that wants nothing more than to sit on your lap all day? Some breeds were just born to be lap dogs, so if that’s what you’re after, we recommend you take a look at one of these 12 breeds.

#1 – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This small and friendly hunting dog was a favorite of King Charles II. They don’t care if you are royalty or not, just if your lap is free.

#2 – Bedlington Terrier

I am not sure these dogs are happy unless they are getting attention. They will cram their long legs into your lap, and while they may look uncomfortable, they are happy as a clam as long as they are getting attention.

#3 – Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the quintessential lap dog. In fact, without proper training, many of them will guard the lap of their favorite person from both human and canine, much to the chagrin of the rest of the family.

#4 – Maltese

This ancient breed was revered – The Greeks erected tombs to their Maltese (www.akc.org). They are “little aristocrats” and love to sit in a lap, soaking up your admiration.

#5 – Yorkshire Terrier

This tiny pup loves a good lap, though they can be shy and prefer a familiar one to a stranger’s.

#6 – Pomeranian

The Pom is a happy dog, especially when in your lap. They are active however, so they may expect a brisk walk or a game of fetch first.

#7 – Pekingese

This breed was literally bred to be a lap dog, so you really can’t go wrong with this cute pup if you want a perpetual lap warmer. The long flowing hair will make you feel like you have a living blanket to keep you warm in the winter.

#8 – Bichon Frise

This happy-go-lucky breed is everyone’s friend…especially if you have an empty lap. Their bigger size won’t stop them from curling up on any vacant seat.

#9 – Pug

We are not sure if the pug is sitting on your lap for attention, or just to get a higher view of the world he owns. Either way, the pug loves a lap, particularly if back scratches are included for no extra cost.

#10 – Dachshund

While they can be stand offish to strangers, doxies love their owners and a nice warm lap, especially on cold nights.

#11 – Coton de Tulear

This tiny powder puff is the perfect lap dog. His adorable looks are sure to win your heart and his playful personality will fill your days with fun.

#12 – Italian Greyhound

These pups may run fast, but when they are not running, they are sleeping and no better place to sleep than a nice warm lap. Don’t worry, they can fold those legs up and fit almost anywhere.
