Lake County Animal Shelter had an issue familiar to most shelters—they rely heavily on donations to fund vaccines, shots, spay/neuters, food, supplies, utility bills, etc. With so many expenses, it’s easy to let building and property maintenance take a back seat. This is where Rescue Rebuild entered the picture.

The team started on the inside and worked their way out. Over 800 hours were dedicated to painting alone—walls, kennels, and even a mural to make the shelter more inviting to prospective adopters. The floors were in dire need of resurfacing. Concrete is a porous surface, and once the top layer of sealant is worn off, or in some places the top layer of concrete, itself, is worn off there isn’t any way to keep the concrete clean and sanitary. The solution is to use a strong acid and etch the concrete to sanitize and then add a special coating to resurface the floor.

The entire shelter’s floor received this treatment, leaving it cleanable again and safe for the animals to walk across. Once the team finished the inside, they moved outdoors and into the hot Florida sun. The perimeter fence received coyote rollers, and a new play yard was constructed for the fur babies to play and release some of that pent-up energy.

Of course Rescue Rebuild couldn’t forget the kitties! They built the cats a large catio, allowing them to roam and play inside or outside at their leisure. This catio was coyote proofed from top to bottom. With the addition of some new landscaping, the boosted curb appeal has adopters flocking in and adoption rates have soared!
