“Derek was a seaman in the Navy/Coast Guard and deployed in San Diego, CA. He approached Pets for Vets looking for a companion animal. Derek suffered from PTSD and occasionally had anxiety in public places. He believed a dog might help him relax and be a ‘buddy’ who could keep him company.
“After meeting with Derek and his family a few times, our chapter personnel was able to locate a Black Lab mix at a local rescue. On the day of the match, the Pets for Vets team brought Smokey into Derek’s home, and all could feel the instant bond between Derek and his new forever buddy. The trainer taught Derek commands for Smokey such as paw, sit, and lie down. It was an emotional moment for everyone as we were able to present Derek with Smokey and thank him for his service.
