      Hello,
Fred is my first basset and I’ve never had this issue with any other dog. When he meets someone he is extremely terrified, cowers in the corner and pees on the floor. He has never been mistreated by anyone and I can not figure out for the life of me how to change it. With people that are around daily he is extremely affectionate and playful.

Hi, I have grown up with bassets and currently have a basset that acts this way too. Sometimes they are just shy. My parents have my dogs great aunt, she is shy too. I have met my parents bassets mother, she is shy too. I have met the breeders ( where we got our bassets from) other dogs and they are great, just this line is shy.

Its just them. You know how some people are just shy? No one ever hit them, they are just shy and take a while to warm up to people, dogs are the same way. Its just who he is.

As long as he knows his humans, he will be fine but around new people, he may always be this way. Just tell the new people that he must make the first move, they cannot reach to him or he will back off.

When he gets scared, ignore it, dont say ” awww its okay” or anything like that, that will teach him it is okay to be scared. Ignore it and talk to the new people and let him figure it out.

      Hope that helps
