My 6 yr old shih tzu has just be diagnoised with cardio arrhythmia, naturally I am heart broken and very concerned. Has anyone dealt with this issue and have any advice and/or tips on what I might be able to do to keep my precious girl as healthy and safe as possible with this new found knowledge? How might I life look different with this? She had her 1st and only (thus far) grand mal seizure, (another new terrifying event) which led to this discovery. Vet believes the 2 issues are unrelated. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

      Hi there,
My Molly, suffered from cardiac disease as well, along with seizures. My advice would be to take a dog based CPR course so if she were to suffer a cardiac arrest you would be prepared.
Also, make sure you are giving her meds on time, regular vet visits and maintaining a healthy weight is very important as extra pounds can stress the heart.
In terms of exercise, just watch her for any signs of intolerance, like slowing down or actually stopping and laying down, check her gums for colour, they should be nice and pink, if they are turning a bit blue/grey, she needs to rest and check her pulse to see what her heart rate is and if it is regular.
As for the seizures, they are pretty scary to watch, if she has a seizure, just make sure she is in a safe place, don’t put anything in her mouth. Keep a note on how long the seizure lasts and if the frequency increases tell your vet so that medication may be indicated.
It’s hard not to worry, I was scared to leave Molly for any length of time, but wanted her to live as full of life as possible, walks as tolerated, playtime with other dogs etc.
All the best to your beautiful baby !!🐶🐾

Thank you so very much for taking the time to reply. I will take your advice and wisdom seriously! I am hesitant with adding meds/treatments as I don’t want to add complications to complications, unless she get worse than she seems to be. We’ll be keeping a close eye on things and take one day at a time. Thank you!

My Gunney has had both for3 yrs now. The arrythmia came first about 6 yrs ago. He seems perfectly healthy if you didnt know better. The first vet didnt think they were seizures because he only had them when being bathed at groomers as far as we know.she thouggt his heart was stopping because of getting like a panic attack. We decided to keep him off of meds because he s happy and playful. I have developed an arryrhmia after chemo and i know how crappy the meds can make you feel i know why i feel this way but he wouldnt. He is now happy and 12 1/2 yrs old and has only had one seizure since i started bathing him at home before grooming.
