My poor dachshund has theses spots that start out like a patch of dry skin then they flake, then once all the flakes come off its a bald spot. I have taken to the very we actually have been going weekly. He doesn’t have mange from the skin scraping, he doesn’t have ringworm. So now we are on antibiotics to see if maybe it’s staff but I have seen no improvement. They also gave me an anti fungal shampoo to bathe him twice a week. On the natural side I have also tried to help with Apple vinegar in his water and coconut oil on the spotss. Rex is 3 and he was fixed 6 months ago, I first noticed I started to see the spots come and go 2 months after that so 4 months now. Food he has been on blue buffalo fish and brown rice for the last 2 years. I have cleaned all his bedding with natural detergent since but I have used the same detergent his whole life so I’m not sure why it would
Have all of a sudden would change. At a loss at the moment.

Hello! My dog is a mix breed but she also had these spots. Nothing helped until I finally got an answer at a vet. Turns out my Lyric us allergic to bug bites. Fleas, mosquitos, any bites. And the result is these patches and wouldn’t go away until she was given prednisone which the vet had prescribed for her. She has had flea treatments before this so don’t assume because you gave them treatment that it’s not possible for them to get bitten or have Fleas because unfortunately it very much so is possible. I hope this helps someone!

My greyhound has the same problem but it starts ou like a little pimple. He licks them and they get infected. This started 2 to 3 years after we got him. Vet said it wasn’t mites, fleas or worms and gave us antibiotics and steroids. We’ve done this twice now. Instead of taking him to the vet for a third round we started puttin Tea Tree oil on the spots and they dry up. If anyone has a permanent fix, please let us know.

I had the same problem with my Shih Tzu, its the dodog food. I was feeding her Blue for years, then her skin got really bad, she started vomiting, swaying, & falling. I took her to vet & she was in liver failure and they had no clue why. I looked on dog advisor.com for recalls, Blue Lamb & rice was making dogs sick, they source out to china Started making her food & for dry food been using Fromm. When her skin was bad I used NZYMES it worked great. Be careful of the food one ingredient can be sourced out to china. Unfortunately, my brother inlaw was feedin their dogs the Blue buffalo and they lost one of them, so sad that they keep this food on the shelves.

OMG, the same thing is happening to my baby too
I thought I was the only person who has spent countless dollars and tried countless medicines on him. I have given up on my Vet, he’s sucking money and patience from me. I read bad things about Tea tree oil, but will try the other suggestions. It is comforting to have a “support group to help.

Have you tried UDDER Cream. My springer is going through an allergy issue at present. She is eating her feet and constantly cleaning her bottom. Her pads were very dry and splitting so I tried the UDDER cream and within a couple of days they were much improved. You can get it on Amazon. The company is Battle, Hayward &Bower Ltd, Crofton Drive, Lincoln, LN3 4NP. UK. Maybe try on a small area to start with. Hope this helps 😊

I really feel for you and your baby and have experienced this all too well with my English Bulldogs who are notorious for their skin problems until our vet told us to simply use Selsun Blue. That simple and yes it works miracles and since we have never had a skin issue again. We use it like this: as soon as we see a spot coming on we take our diluted (1/3-1/2 water to 3/4-1/2 Selsun Blue MUST BE NON MEDICATED) and saturate the spot. We let it stay on and dry and then give a bath with either the Selsun Blue diluted or oatmeal bar soap. We are so thankful to have been given this info for we had tried everything prior. I wish you and your baby well and please post after pics, we would love to see : )

Woops, I meant 1/4-1/2 water to 3/4 to 1/2 Selsun Blue. You will get a feel of the consistency that works for you and dogs coat. You will need to let it sit on the spot and dry, so if too runny it will drip off. And I forgot to add in there that we put it on a spot and let dry and stay on for a few days before we give a bath. Not a bath right away. Hope this helps you : )

I had the same problem every summer with my chow/shepherd mix. Each time I took him to the vet it was allergy and he hit him with steroids and antibiotics. One day the groomer at the vet saw him and said to wash him with dawn dish detergerent. Never had another problem. That was 5 tears ago.

A few months ago I rescued and adopted a 3years old male German Shepherd(GS). I brought her to the vet. The Vet did a thorough checking. No mange except, bald, dry skin with plenty of dry skin peeling off through out the body. Most prominent was around the neck, upper part of the body. The Vet gave antifungal shampoo and epidermal cream. He told me to give our new GS whom we called Jackie 6 spoons of full cream milk(like Fern Leaf, Nespray,etc,..). According to him within 4-5months things will be back to normal. I took him home, gave him the necessary cleaning up. Indeed, the Vet was perfectly right. Now the skin is back to normal within plenty of hairs growing up. I am so happy with his progress. As a matter of record, I have done this with all the others adopted fur babies. They are good.

I hope this will help you and others.

My airedale has been a nervous wreck since his last booster shots this summer! His skin typically has minor breakouts whenever he’s stressed about anything. Being a purebred that’s normal for him but this time is the worst I’ve seen in 5yrs. He’s had weepy eyes, nose, coughing, hives, and these dry, flaky patches, too. I give him a 24hr antihistamine to check the hives when the itching is out of control and it turns out that it took care of the weepy eyes, nose, and coughing, too. He needs one tablet once or twice a week right now, or if the weather is damp or cold. Before those booster shots, he needed an antihistamine once or twice a year. I also had to wipe his nose and use a Q-tip in the corners to clear the blocked passages in the morning a few days because it was running while he was sleeping. When I saw a balm stick at the pet store counter for $6 for pets chapped noses and the ingredients were the same as mine I bought one for him like mine and it works great. His nose healed right up after a couple days. These photos are before the chapstick and you can see how badly he was chapped on his nose. Now his nose is moist, shiny, and cool and he’s breathing normally again. He also likes to bundle up in his blankets at night, and he’s now wearing a t-shirt and flannel jacket after sundown and whenever the weather is damp or cold. I take everything off in the mornings and examine his skin and every few days he gets a thorough brushing and comb through the rough patches to remove dead skin followed by a cold rinse with the hose and a brisk walk to increase circulation. He loves that part the best. His wardrobe and blankets are washed regularly. I change his t-shirt after his each brushing and bath. Once a month he gets a hot shower at the self-wash tub at Unleashed. His hives and dry patches are nearly gone and I’m sure when he recovers from this his immune system will be stronger than ever but I will never give him those booster shots again. He’s 8yrs old now and won’t be due for those for a few more years by then they are more likely to shorten his life than increase it. The rabies shots are enough tax on his system. Off topic a bit but indirectly relevant, I noticed he was getting a mild cataract last year and I found a solution online that claimed to reverse the condition and after a few months of regular drops it worked. Its called Vision Clarity, its not cheap but it works and its recommended for both people and pets. I tried them although I don’t have cataracts, I noticed my eyes were less stressed and will continue to use them to prevent macular degeneration as I get older too. I’ve been keeping his coat short this winter while the dry patchy condition persists, and he has lost very little of his hair. Most of the bald spots I think are from him wiggling around while I’m grooming him because it tickles and/or the shaver gets too hot. Most of the hives are gone after several months of this but they seem to persist mostly wherever he scratches himself on his sides and neck. I did find some small bumps along his feet and butt making me think it may be something he’s getting into outside in the yard sticking in his fur, too. This is a complex problem he seems to be hyper-sensitized to everything right now. So I chalk it up to his immune system taxed initially and primarily by all those shots. The rest are just symptoms. He’s had several thorough baths since the flare-up initially with epson salt scrub, eucalyptus and neem solution, colloidal oatmeal, salt, and tonic water spray, as well as aloe vera gel to treat the initial broken skin when the condition flared up and he started chewing the hives. The condition is nearly cleared up now. I read this article because I wanted to know if anyone else has noticed this condition flare up about 2-4 wks after booster shots. I am deliberately avoiding things like antibiotics and steroids because they have more side effects than benefits and vets prescribe them for everything they can’t pin-down or remedy quickly. I haven’t tried Selsun Blue or Dawn to bath him in but if all else fails I will try that before turning to antibiotics and steroids. I’ve also heard the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse clears up all pet skin issues. I doubt that his diet is a concern because it hasn’t changed greatly since this issue started. Not likely it has anything to do with it or that his general health is deteriorating for any other reason. I’m positive this is an issue that will pass eventually, as those shots need to be administered regularly to have any lasting effects, much like flu shots for people which I avoid like the plague as they always make me sick and I NEVER EVER get sick without the shots. I do feed him the same probiotics I take with food occasionally as well. Occasionally, we both take vitamins too. I give him dog treats with fish oils and supplements for joints whenever he’s under the weather with the aspirin or antihistamine depending on his behavior. Now, I watching him closely to prevent excessive scratching, and he’s not allowed to lick or chew himself at all although I have not needed any topical treatments for weeks. So essentially, I am keeping him warm, dry, and giving him a dry brushing followed by a cold rinse with the hose every few days and he’s getting better. I have had to give him an aspirin a couple times. I can tell when he has a headache because he can’t sleep and he stares into space with a dazed look in his eyes. During fireworks or anything I know will upset him I give him a tablespoon of poppyseeds mixed in food to help him relax and/or sleep when he’s restless. Everything I treat him with or administer is safe enough for me and I adjust the portions to his weight which is about half my weight. Other than those booster shots he has had no health major issues that require veterinarian prescriptions the 5yrs I’ve had him. I buy a good grade of grain free dog food, supplemented with lots of home cooked veggies/fruits which he loves as well as milk, eggs, cheese. And, also one meal a day is supplemented with about 2-3 oz canned dog food, I use Alpo but he likes any meat I give him, which is nuked for at least 30 secs to kill any bacteria that might be present as well as warming the meal for him without boiling the remaining life out of it. Occasionally, I cook meat or bones for him and I rarely eat meat or fish myself but when I do he gets some of that too. I make sure that he gets enough peaceful sleep and exercise and an outing in the car at least once a week even if just to go shopping once a week and he is a very well adjusted best friend.

My daschund mix does this in the warmer months. We have figured out that it is from flea bites. All it takes is one. So what we do is give him a good flea bath, and put the Hartz flea ointment down his back. Ever since we have been doing this for him, no more hair loss, dandruff, and scratching.

I am so glad I found this post!

My Doxie is male, short haired, 14 lbs and almost 3 yrs old.

The bumps/ patches are the same my dog experienced Nov2015-May2016 (Fall-Summer), we live in Northern Virginia. During this time I took him to two different vets and a specialist with no concrete answer after $2K worth of vet bills ugh! The only answer I was given after ruling most things out was that it may be a food allergy or an environmental allergy, so we placed him on Venison diet. His skin finally cleared up and his hair grew back late last summer 2016. This year the same bumps, scratching and losing hair in patches started again, although this time it started in February 2017. Now, knowing it may be due to bug bites, I will try the what some of the other postings have recommended. Let you know what works, thanks all!

5weeks ago I adopted a 7yr old male red-coat dachshund. At the spca he had some flaking and tiny tufts of hair coming out. The medical record had nothing notated on this – figured some fatty acids added to his diet would aide in clearing it up. Took him to the vet who, also, said add some fatty acids to his food.Nope, didn’t do squat. As with other posters, he does not scratch, but seems sensitive to the area when I touch him. Any other pooch parents notice sensitivity in this area when you touch them?

      Only just found/joined this site.
Have a very handsome 14mth white EBT boy (probably keeping his doo-dahs).
From 6mths we’ve had gut probs/skin issues. Had an EBT girlie years ago and she had her skin issues, but this has been a baptism of fire, reminding us of the ‘joys’ of owning a whitey!!
Noticed fur thinning around his temples/snout/top of head: Vet gave meds of Dermodectic. Mange which worked really well. Haven’t had any issue with it since.
However, he appears to be intolerant to so much: food, stings/bites. Got him on Eukanuba FP to cover both gut and skin. Seems OK-ish. If I give him any fruits or veggies I check straight away if he starts licking his paws/gets red eyes/scratches. Nightmare! He has a great appetite and we don’t give him junk (even though we’re partial ha ha!) but seems we’re on a bit of a rollercoaster ride to see what he CAN actually tolerate.
I digress…but main reason for replying is got lots of great suggestions re: hair loss from other dog walkers. Two things mentioned that we might want to try: CAMROSA CREAM and BOB GREEN’S SKINCARE CREAM (sites in UK). Tried a bit of Bob’s on the inside of the boy’s ear (scratching an ear infection!) and it seems to have calmed a lot.
Will do what we can to stop our boy itching/scratching/eat well, but hate, hate, hate keep shooving loads of chemicals (vit meds!) into him. Can’t be good for him.
Will get him to a good place with his gut/skin and would like to try adding a bit of Coconut oil to his food and a bit of Apple Cider Vinegar to a drop of water . PLEASE don’t be allergic to the good stuff boy!
Hope you/ve found something to give your lil’ fella some relief. For me there’s nothing worse than watching your dog scratch/keep licking its paws. Must be so uncomfortable for them.

I too have a Dachshund with the bumps, hair loss and dry skin. I’ve taken her to several vets and they all say the same thing allergies. I live in Colorado and in the winter I don’t think its allergies. I feed raw food from Andersons which helped with any liver and kidney problems and have been changing up the raw food for years. (No kibble) Blue is a really bad food as I’ve had many neighbors bring their pets to the vet and all of them were on that food. Once I told them about better foods every one of those dogs got better. As for the bumps, hair loss, itchy skin. I have tried everything. I am going to try the the shampoo idea and hope it stops the itchiness. I can’t believe with all these dogs having this, the vets can’t figure it out.

I may have an answer for some people. In doing some more research on this dry skin bald spot issue that so many dogs seem to have, I think it may be lupus. I had a dog that had lupus and it normally shows on the nose as red and peeling, It looks like the dog was digging in dirt. I did get it confirmed with my vet. Since I am a nutritionist, instead of using any kind of vet medications I chose Pau D’arco. It’s an herb that fights against cancer, yeast infections and a bunch of other things. It’s a natural immune buster and it helped my dog by eliminating the redness ands scaling on the nose and he did live until he was 16 he was a lab. The vet was impress and wanted to know what I used because several other dogs had lupus as well. I thought that was weird because I thought it was rare. Come to find out it wasn’t. So the vet recommended the pau d arco for the other dogs and he let me know it worked quite well on more than 1/2 of the animals. I think I am going to get the capsules and add it to the food to see if it works. Hope this helps someone including my baby.

my heeler/pit rescue has been with us for 3 yrs now. a recent move from NM to DC had me giving him nextguard and heartguard because of the flea/tick mosquito infestation here. An allergy to the heartworm meds had him break out in massive hives and wheezy, which cause a middle of the night EMER RM visit at the vets. we tried ano heart worm med and ano reaction : scaly skin on his back down his spine and flakes everywhere. He didn’t scratch, but I felt an oatmeal bath would help (soothe?) however, what happend immed after that was he just shut down, even stopped walking with in 2 days. ANO vet visit, she told us that he had hair folic infection, and the bath just made it worse. spread the bacteria and inflammed his skin. He is now on 5 meds. antibiotic, anti inflammitory, pepcid, benadryl, and pro biotics. he is feeling much better. Seriously thought he had cushings disease…….it’s been a week and the scales are back and flakier than ever. he doesn’t itch or scratch……we can’t give him a bath until after all meds are gone. I think the VET is guessing jsut like i am. I want to bathe him and just dont know what to do. The weather here is different, we are now in an apartment 9th floor vs a house in desert with dog door. Climate conditions def will have an effect, but i am honeslty scared of fleas and tic having never seen/been around either. help!
