I have a 2 year old husky that is an extremely picky eater. I have tried every brand of high quality dog foods and all she will eat is Iams. She is 45 pounds and just does not seem to gain weight. Vet said to put her back on puppy food. I am looking for different suggestions for her to gain weight. She also has a sensitive stomach and gets sick if given some food such as boiled chicken, etc.

Hey Lisa! I’m the owner here at iHeartDogs.com, and I also have a husky. We rescued her at 2 years old, and she also had a very sensitive stomach at that age. We had her on Blue Buffalo for a while, but her stomach wouldn’t tolerate it. We switched her to Kirkland chicken (from Costco), and her stomach issues completely went away.

Does your vet think she is underweight? Our dog has always maintained right about 45 pounds, and the vet thinks thats just fine for female husky.

Hey Lisa, my husky is a picky eater! Also he used to have a really sensitive stomach! The only way he eats is with some coconut oil mixed into his food. He absolutely goes crazy for it!! He’ll eat 3 cups a day! He’s 8 months… Try some coconut oil! Good luck!

My 5 year old 65 lbs. husky malamute was the same, he would have diarhea most of the time I fed him commercial dog food or even the vet’s prescribed food….One day, I decided I was going to cook his meals from that point on….

I use beef liver, hamburger steak, mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans, corn) and rice….I cook the meat first then add water, veggies and rice and simmer until most of the liquid is evaporated leaving just a sauce….I also add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil…..this makes about 8 portions. I then freeze the meals in meal size containers (about 1 1/2 cups per portion)

I also give him 1 1/2 cups of dry food (Costco brand – Kirkland).

He’ll usually eat the cooked food first (at 5:30 pm) and at 11:30 pm he decides to eat the dry food….

For sure it comes out a little bit more expenssive, but he’s worth every single penny with all the joy he gives me.

these two seem to have worked quite well for him…..his “caca” is now solid and everytime we go to the vet she says his coat is beautiful and shiny, he’s not overweight and extremely healthy, his teeth are really healthy and white…..I always get perfect results

I think a 2 yr old husky at 45 lbs is just fine. She is still very young and unless she is a working dog I wouldn’t want to be putting any weight on her. Does she have other issues going on that would be affecting her weight. Any diarrhea or vomitting, soft stools. I have 2 huskies……both are hypothyroid ( which is a husky thing) There is a possibility that your dog is not absorbing the nutrional value from her food and that could explain he not gaining weight. Puppy food is extremely high fat. As long as she is healthy I wouldn’t worry about it In regard to the sensitive stomach perhaps your dog may have a food allergy. My young husky is on a hyrolized vet diet because of an allergy to animal protein. Perhaps a limited ingredient diet might be helpful. Good luck…..it is tough finding a good quality food that works for your dog when they have issues.

Lisa, if you look at the AKC breed standards for Siberian Huskies, you’ll see 45 lbs is a pretty good weight for female, even full grown. Unless she just looks emaciated (which, admittedly, would be hard to tell unless she’s a short hair) or displays other symptoms like low energy or dehydration, she should be fine.

I don’t have a husky but had a very picky eater…he’s now eating well and we use a diet formula i get from our vet…turns out he also had sensitive stomach and after he had an accident and lots of blood tests were done on him he had unusual readings in some of his counts…anyways what i really wanted to say is that he now has to be on potassium pills for the rest of his life and this has helped with his sensitive stomach and fussy eating..sorry i cant recall at the moment what the tests were that he had but if u would really like to know i could look them up and maybe u can have ur guy checked out too..

otherwise i dont think he needs to be fattened up at all…my guy was never uderweight although he was a fussy eater…go figure…lol
