Hi! I have a 15 year old Husky/Shepard cross. Lately, we have noticed that his fur is not as soft as it used to be, and he seems to be shedding, which is unusual, because in the past, he finishes shedding by June. Is this just because of his age? Or is he missing something in his diet? He is still a fairly active dog, even with damaged hind ACL’s, and is fed a vet approved diet. Any suggestions or advice?

Ask your vet to test his thyroid levels. It is a blood test and if it is low they can give him meds. Hypothhroid is a husky thing. I have a 12.5 yr old husky mix and he is hypothyroid.I have a 7yr old Siberian and we are keeping an eye on her for low thyroid. She was tested and not ready for meds quite yet. The meds make a huge difference.
I noticed on your facebook post people are advising you to use fish oil. Before my husky was diagnosed with Hypothyroid his coat looked terrible and his spring shed never stopped. I started feeding him a Salmon Dog Food. He ate less than half of the bag and got really sick. I rushed him to the emergency Vet Clinic……he almost died ……the fish food was too high fat and he had an acute pancreatic attack. So now is is hypothyroid and he has pancreatitis. Needs to be on a low fat diet for the rest of his life. It is harder with older dogs because you think they are changing because of their age but I would strongly advise you to get the Thyroid levels checked.

Thank you Dawn! I will have him checked. As for the fish oil, that was back when he had ACL surgery. I was told by friends and a vet to give him only a little fish oil twice a week during his recovery!
