My name’s is Riddick, and while my name’s the same as it ever was, my life is sure different now. My original owners, from what I recall, didn’t seem to finish what they started. Example: They had my ears cropped early, but didn’t care to tape them afterward, so one is very crooked & looks funny. So they didn’t want to be seen with me and kept me confined. Then they hoped I could make them some puppies, but I was physically incapable; The vet told them I had a bowel obstruction, was positive for Von Willebrand’s and was cryptorchid (no pups for me). Instead of getting me treatment, they stopped feeding me, and when I didn’t die, they dropped me off at the pound. I was 2-1/2 years old, was skin and bones with no hair and scared of everything – no one wanted to adopt me. Thankfully, a local AKC Doberman judge named Beth heard about me, and took me in to shelter me, get me treated and neutered, and nurse me back to health so she could help me find my forever home. It was nice respite. At her home, I was surrounded by Royal Tudor Doberman champions who accepted me as a brother despite my scruffy looks. I’d never gotten to run and play with other dogs before.
One day, out of the blue, Beth got a call from a nice lady whose elderly Doberman had recently died. She asked Beth for leads on any Dobermans in need of rescue. The minute I met this lady, who I now call Mom, it was love at first sight, and she loved me too, and didn’t mind my funny ear. Now I live up in the Sierra Nevada foothills with Mom and Sis — Sis isn’t my real sister, but my Mom’s daughter. I call her Sis because she works with dogs as her job, so she smells just like a dog! I also really enjoy when Bro comes to visit. I get really stoked when anyone comes to visit, really — I spin around in circles at the door and smile nice and big and charming for company. I’m not so afraid anymore. My coat is now smooth and shiny, and I weigh 70 pounds, so I’m pleased with my looks too.
My life is full of adventure and love these days. Mom takes me hiking, swimming, bicycling and just about everywhere so I can see the world. I get to meet new people and many new dogs. Sis takes me with her on hikes and jogs, and to our nearby historical dog park to run around. My family adores my companionship and how I hang my head out the car window with my tongue flapping. Mom and Sis take me to doggie school too, which I enjoy very much. I now know my commands in English and German, and I love to do all these cool, adventurous new things. Life is full of fun, and Mom watches my health and loves me and my wonky ear to pieces. Forever, she says. I’m her 5th Doberman, and she’d rescued 4 of them, so I believe her.
