My 8 year old Chihuahua recently woke up screaming loudly and he looked confused. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Could be a hart murmur getting worse or a small stroke at worse. Or it could be just a bad dream. That happend to my chi and it was a hart murmur that had gotten worse. Good luck, see a vet.

Mine has done that as well. Thought maybe a pulled muscle but couldn’t get him to yelp on physical examination. Neither could my get. But he did get a steroid shot and that has helped greatly. Hope yours is doing better!

My Chihuahua does that all the time. Before he came to live with me he was badly neglected
living in a small cage. I believe he is having a nightmare when he does it. -

Yup! Our 13 yo rescue has down that twice during his first week with us. It’s usually in the middle of the night, when he’s been sleeping. The sound is weird – not a growl, yelp, cry or bark – but, kinda like a roar… I know, funny. We take him outside and he pees, then goes right back to sleep. Might be that. Wishing you and your chi the very best.

Most likely a seizure, a mild one. I’ve had two Chihuahuas that had seizures. It’s awful, especially as they get worse over time. My last one just passed last week. I lost one of my babies on Monday due to a diabetic crisis and then on Wednesday morning the other one had seizures. She would scream out and sorta curl her feet up then as it continued her whole body would twist. It’s awful and there is nothing you can do for them while they are having one. This was her first time to have one and I rushed her to the vet, as they immediately took her back she passed away. Such a shock and to lose them both so close together. Such a tragedy. I hope your baby isn’t having seizures, but keep a close eye on her/him.
