my border terrier is so good at home, but when I walk him, he screams and pulls at other dogs, it is embarrassing, it sounds like I am killing him, he is only 19 months old. I end up walking him where there are no other dogs which isn’t the answer

I can’t wait to hear some answers. I have a Yorkie who does the same. Calm, sweet, loving until he sees another dog. Working with a trainer, but would love some input as well.

Try looking up website of Dr. Sophia Yin. She offers some really good videos on walking reactive dogs…rewarding desired behavior, and removing any kind of reward for undesirable behavior. So unfortunate that she’s no longer living, but her colleagues are still promoting her vision in animal training.
My dog does the same thing, screams and is highly reactive – I’ve been working with different techniques in redirecting her attention back to me – then immediately reward her for that. Now it’s automatic that she looks to me for direction, however it’s diligently working with her everyday on our walks. She falls off the wagon at times, but I do not correct her or acknowledge that behavior – but constantly redirect her away from the stimulant if that makes sense.

Armed with small tasty treats…have several people with dogs..walk by your dog at various locations and as they do..use the treat to hold your dog’s attention…if your dog looks at you or pays attention to the treat as the other dog walks by..give your dog the treat to show them that this is the desired behavior…After a few times..the dogs that pass your dog will not be important and your dog will walk nicely…good luck

I am also waiting for some ‘solutions’! I have a Cocker that does this too! He is 5 and has been attacked 3 times in his life by dogs off leash. We live in a State Park, and people always let their dogs run, even though it is not allowed. Now my dogs screams, and of course it agitates others…dogs AND humans, and it is SO embarrassing to me, and obviously distressing to him.

My dog was doing this. I just got her at the end of August. She is about six and was totally unsocialized as she was a Puppy mill breeder. At first, I tried the treats and she got worse. I watched the dog whisperer and tried his method which was to “shshsh” her and if needed touch her to get her attention. At first I even had to make her sit as the dog walked past us. We now walk by dogs…many of them barking at her. And, she just walks on by.

Would love any advice…5 days ago we adopted 2 yr old Ziggy, our 5th poodle, our 3rd rescue, our 1st toy (we always had minis). We got him from a woman who rescued him from someone who wasn’t caring for him well and was leaving the country. She thought she would keep him. But she has 2 big dogs and was worried he would get hurt when they played. We saw him in her home playing with her dogs and it looked like he was having a good time, but they did play too rough for such a little guy, he’s 6 1/2 lbs. He is the sweetest, mellowest, cuddle cutie in the world at home. But we are finding out that he goes absolutely nuts… barking, growling and running around like a whirling dervish when he sees other dogs outside. I shake a penny bottle and tell him no but that doesn’t seem to do a thing. He doesn’t calm down but if I let him get close he sniffs a butt or 2 and then seems OK, even able to visit the dog in their home and play. But walking him is a nightmare. Never had a dog that did anything like this. There are only little dogs in my community, so maybe that’s it? He’s only comfortable with big ones? Don’t know quite how to handle this. Suggestions? Thanks so much.

Hi, I’ve just joined in, 2 years late! But I adopted a 9 year old large lab/pointer mix who wails whenever we walk near another dog, no matter how big, small, docile, uninterested the other dogs may be. I’ve just read Grandma Carole’s post so I’m going to try this method.
I’m attaching a video taken today with my cellphone.
I believe he is very stressed out around other dogs. He’s very mellow and eager to please at home- a total gem! I rescued him from the city pound and they said he got along well with other dogs which is not so. He loves people and has quickly become attached to me.
Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated!
      Thank you
