I have a Standard Poodle that has had a rough life and she was born 5/17. She will not leave one room of the house, or come when called. She cowers when I try to leash train her, and the other owners “beat the puppy” out of her. She has just started to run in the yard. I could really use some help/ideas to get her doggie back before some bad habits are hard to break. The habits are..being carried from “her room” to other parts of the house and to go outside, eating in her room, etc..everything a scared dog does. She was very ill when I got her, but is doing a bit better. Thanks for anything you can tell me

First of all, thank goodness she has found a loving home. Sounds like she’s going to require a lot of time and patience to feel comfortable, but you sound up for the job!

Are you in a position to afford a visit with a behaviorist? They can be a big help, especially with a situation like this.

I’m not a professional and have no experience with severely abused dogs, but if she is food motivated, that could be a key solution. When she leaves the room on her own, or even makes an attempt…treats! When she comes to you…treats! Leave the leash on the floor; if she smells it or goes anywhere near it…more treats!

I wish you both the best of luck!
