Hi Hellena, I assume that the bull terrier in your profile pic is your dog? It’s hard to answer your questions and give you accurate advice without knowing the breed, age and health condition of your dog. But in general, with vet bills rising fast (I think I read 10%+ per year) it’s important to not get complacent about vet care. Our vet said most dog owners don’t learn about pet insurance until their dog is facing a serious or even deadly health crisis and by then no insurance company will provide coverage because the condition is preexisting.
It’s also important to know what pet insurance does not do. It does not cover regular, routine vet visits. Instead it’s designed to cover unexpected health emergencies.
Look up these terms and get to know them well before enrolling in any plan: reimbursements, pre-existing conditions, deductibles, payout limits, hereditary health problems (and how much coverage each company/plan offers for them), benefits schedule vs. actual vet bill reimbursement.
We’ve had healthy paws for a while now and they’ve paid for a few minor surgeries, a swallowed set of keys and a hurt knee and paid ninety percent of the actual vet bill. They’ve been friendly and helpful and always pay quickly so I’d recommend them without reservation. Some others I’ve heard offer good coverage are embrace and petplan too.
