I have a 10 month old Doxie puppy. His first 5 months were spent in a kennel with his siblings and almost no human contact. He is great with other dogs; however, he will not let me touch him. He will cuddle and lick me, but if I go to touch him, he runs. This makes it impossible to get a leash on him. I need to travel in a motorhome and so need to be able to take him for a walk. Right now, he plays outside, but has no idea what to do with a leash or how to walk outside of the yard. Any ideas how to gain his trust or to get a leash on him to teach him how to go for a walk?
I also rescued a Doxie from a puppy mill. He he had not had any human contact. He had been kept in a cage his entire life. He was 8 months old. He was absolutely terrified. He had never even been inside of a house before. All I can say is it takes a lot of patience. My husband used to have to lay on the floor to be at face level with him to gain his Trust. He was terrified of men. I am happy to say that after years of love and spoiling he is a happy healthy 10 year old doxie that I would not trade for anything in the world. Do not give up on your dog. Be patient it will get better
Pamela is right. I took in two Doxies, who were simply no longer wanted by their owners. The father is very self contained, and the daughter is just a screamer, whenever anything startles her. Be patient. If you can attach the leash, inside, and just sit and watch tv or feed her treats, or something pleasant, while she wears it, she’ll learn. Doxies are geniuses – she’ll figure it out.
Sit or lay on floor , no eye contact it is intimidating. Have treats only offer when it comes close.
