My shih tzu recently had 2 surgeries for bladder stones. The first vet could not get the stones that were in his urinary track. I had to take him to a specialist for another surgery. 6 stones were removed in all. 3 large in his bladder and 3 in his urinary track. He is now on Royal Canine S/O. His stones were Calcium oxolate stones. Does anyone have a dog that had stones? What do you feed him? have them reoccurred? Do you test his urine? I bought test strips and his urine seems to be a a good ph level now. It was very high when he had the oxolate stones which is odd because that is the environment for struvate stones.

Hi – I’m sorry to hear about your Shih Tzu’s bladder stone health issues… I have a 7 year old female Shih Tzu. Fourteen months ago, she had surgery to remove one pretty good sized bladder stone. (We originally thought she just had a bladder infection when I brought her to the vet because her urine seemed dark…& turns out some blood in it.)
My dog is also on Royal Canine Urinary SO (mostly canned but some dry also). We ended up putting her on a chewable daily urine acidifier (Methioform) because her “every couple of months” urinalysis after the surgery showed her ph level was not good. (We needed to reduce the risk of her growing another stone.) She has also had 2 periodic abdominal x-rays done to make sure there is no new stones growing.
Last week I took her for a urinalysis & it turns out she has a bladder infection. Out of the blue-we don’t know how she got it!
So, with all that said…. I would encourage you to have your dog monitored by a vet (periodic urinalysis & x-rays) to ensure that you don’t need to further medicate him with an acidifier…it’s an inexpensive chewable pill. Also, by my dog’s resent bladder infection, which I had no idea she had, without the urinalysis I would have never know – until her health/bladder got really messed up.
A long time ago, I had 2 Shih Tzu’s (litter mates). One of them had BAD urine problems/crystals in her urine. Back then, both dogs were put on Hill’s canned c/d — their entire lives. I could be wrong, but it seems that maybe Shih Tzu’s are prone to bladder/urine health problems… I don’t know… I hope I helped you in some way. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

Barbara, Thank you for your response! I just saw it. Your dog is absolutely adorable! We also thought my Chewie had a urinary track infection and tried treating him with antibiotics. When he started to bleed after urinating we took xrays and it wasn’t until the second xray that we saw all of the stones. I’m so worried they are forming again. I bought PH test strips online and have checked his urine which seems be in a good range but I think I need to bring him in to the vet for a more accurate test. I’ll ask about the acidifier. Do you plan on keeping your dog on the Royal Canine s/o for the rest of her life? My vet says it is ok but I read read some blogs that say otherwise. Thank you for all of your help!

Hi – I just wrote a post regarding your bladder stone concerns. I messed up cuz I don’t think it’s showing as a “reply” to you. My name is Barbara & I attached a picture of my dog here…the same picture that’s in my original post. I hope you find my reply! 🙂

I have a 3 yr Shih Tzu. She had a UTI and stones. She had to have bladder stone surgery. The vet said she had to be put on “special diet” for the rest of her life. She was given Royal Canine s/o or can have Hill’s (different company, same treatment). I do not agree as I think forcing her to eat this food that has salt in it is bad for her. Trying to find an alternative food. (The man in my life disagree over this). I want to do what is best for her but think this dog food is not the right way. Seeking alternatives! I think Freshpet (rolls) is excellent but I cannot get anyone (vet, etc.) to agree with me.of alternative food or treatment to S/O. HELP~
