Many people do not feel that pugs can be service dogs. It really depends on the person’s needs. For me I had three needs post a massive concussion…First, to alert me to curbs….pugs are low to the ground and certainly can find curbs easily; Second, to get me through crowds..Taishan maneuvers through crowds with amazing skill. Because he is so cute and so determined, people just part the way for him; and finally, third, he gets me up stairs. He goes up two stairs ahead of me and anchors me. He stops to look back to make sure I am making it up the stairs. He is the perfect service dog. Perfect size to fly on airplanes or to sit under a table in an inconspicuous way. My life would be totally different without him. I have been able to do so much more because he is a trained service dog. He did basic obedience, the AKC Good Citizen program and finally some specialized training. If you need a service dog for low to the ground needs, a pug is perfect.
