Many of us dream of how we’d use a fortune if we were millionaires—perhaps on luxury cars, lavish homes, or exotic vacations. But one man chose a different path, dedicating his wealth to a cause close to his heart: rescuing dogs in need. Wang Yan, a successful businessman in Changchun, China, amassed his fortune in the steel industry. Yet, his life took an unexpected turn when his beloved dog disappeared. Determined to find his furry companion, Wang searched everywhere.
Eventually, someone suggested he check one of the darkest places imaginable—the local slaughterhouse. In Changchun, where the stray dog population is significant, many unfortunate dogs are captured and sold into the cruel dog meat trade. While Wang’s search for his dog ended in heartbreak—he didn’t find his lost pet—what he witnessed left a lasting impact.
Wang knew he couldn’t stand by and do nothing. In a move that would forever change countless lives, he decided to purchase the slaughterhouse. But instead of running it for profit, he transformed it into a safe haven for stray and abandoned dogs.
Reports reveal that Wang spent $400,000 to acquire the facility and has since poured much of his wealth into maintaining the shelter. Despite the financial burden, even putting himself at risk of debt, he remains committed to his mission. “I don’t accept monetary donations,” Wang explained to Metro. “I only hope that kind-hearted people will donate supplies to help.”
Thanks to Wang’s extraordinary efforts, as of 2015, his sanctuary had provided refuge to over 2,000 dogs. Even better, 200 of them had found forever homes through adoption.
Wang Yan’s power of compassion has saved thousands of lives. Thank you, kind sir, for this brave act. We are forever grateful for your selflessness.
