“Connecticut in December is COLD! The dogs felt the same way! The Rescue Rebuild team headed to New London, CT to help winterize the dog houses at Safe Futures. Safe Futures’priority is always to keep the pet with their person. The therapeutic benefits of the human-animal bond are undeniable. When a person has been a victim of domestic violence, the comfort and stability their pet brings to their life should not be stripped away.
“The Rescue Rebuild team loves that more and more shelters are becoming pet-friendly and we want to help them become even more so! For this build, Rescue Rebuild partnered with RedRover, a national animal welfare nonprofit that brings animals out of crisis and strengthens the bond between people and pets.
“Before building two new dog houses, we winterized the existing ones due to the cold temperatures. The team added weather stripping and a heater, making it much warmer and more comfortable for the dogs. Even with a fur coat, an animal can get too cold to survive in a dog house without proper insulation. If you don’t think you could stay warm in one, the dog can’t either! We then built two more dog houses, both of which we properly winterized.
“We know that dogs love to run around outside, so Rescue Rebuild and RedRover built three new chain link play yards. Before doing so, we had to make enough space for them. This included tearing out existing bush in the way and laying down erosion cloth. Having these new play yards creates an area for the dogs to get out their energy to then rest soundly at night.
“Cats! The team renovated and organized Safe Futures existing cat room by making it brighter and fuller of enrichment. We added perches and shelves for the cats to climb on, as we know that cats love to climb! We wish we had the good luck of always landing on our feet when falling. The volunteers built a rope bridge for the cats to be brave and venture over. It does not take much to create some enrichment for animals, and it’s fun to do!”
