What’s funny about the term “designer” dog breeds is that these dogs are all just adorable (but trendy) mutts! These 10 “designer” dog breeds consistently top the list when it comes to popularity.
Remember that shelters are full of adorable mutts desperately in need of homes. Adoption is the best option! If it’s mixed breed like these that suits your fancy, look into breed-specific rescues with the breeds up for adoption.
#1 – Cockapoo
This adorable pup is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. It’s no wonder so many breeders mix with breeds with Poodles! These dogs are loyal and cuddly.
#2 – Maltipoo
As it’s name suggests, the Maltipoo is a Maltese/Poodle mix. A more pocket-sized dog but with all that fluff.
#3 – Labradoodle
The Labradoodle was created to be a hypoallergenic dog by crossing Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Combine smarts with loyalty and this is what you end up with!
#4 – Goldendoodle
Just like his Labradoodle cousin, the Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever mixed with a Poodle. A curly and friendly combination. It’s no surprise two popular breeds make for a popular mixed breed.
#5 – Mal-shi
The Mal-shi is a cross between a Maltese and Shih Tzu. That pairing makes for the cutest little floof!
#6 – Puggle
One of the “original” designer breeds, the Puggle is Pug/Beagle cross. They have slightly larger bodies but maintain that iconic little Pug mouth.
#7 – Schnoodle
A funny name to reflect a funny personality, the Schnoodle is a Schnauzer/Poodle mix. They do look a bit more like curly-haired Schnauzers, but have the Poodle attitude and intelligence.
#8 – Yorkipoo
These little guys are Yorkshire Terrier/Poodle crosses. They have the Poodle smarts and the tiny Yorkie size.
#9 – Pomchi
Can’t decide between a Pomeranian or Chihuahua? Go with both by getting a Pomchi! They’re tiny little princes and princesses.
#10 – Cheeks
These adorable little pups are Chihuahua/Pekingese mixes! With Chihuahuas living longer than average dog lifespans, it’s no surprise they’re commonly bred with other dogs.
When you love all dogs, it’s hard to declare one single combination of breeds the most adorable. But if one of these so-called “designer” dogs caught your eye, there are plenty of rescues that specialize in these breeds. Check The American Kennel Club’s list of rescues to start. You can also check shelters for owner surrendered breeds or try telling them exactly what you’re looking for.
If you want to get particular, you might also have to be a bit patient to find the dog you want.
