When it comes to colors, the doggy gene pool is pretty incredible! Most breeds have a wide range of colors and combinations. However, due to popularity trends and/or AKC regulations, some coat variations are rarely seen. Here are 8 cool-coated dogs you probably don’t see walking through your neighborhood.

#1 – Wirehaired Vizsla

The wirehaired variation of the common smooth-coated Vizsla, is actually recognized as a different breed by the AKC. However, they do look similar and even come in the same coppery red color, except they have a dense wiry coat.

#2 – Liver Spotted Dalmatian

The classic look of a black spotted Dalmatian on a fire engine is one anyone would recognize. But what if that dog had brown spots? The Dalmatian also comes in a pretty liver-spotted coat, but it’s never been as popular as the traditional black and white.

#3 – Color-headed White Shetland Sheepdog

The color-headed white sheltie looks like a paint horse, and it really is striking. However, since it’s not AKC accepted, you do not see it much. It’s one of the many colors shelties comes in and you get one by breeding two white-factored dogs together.

#4 – English Cream Dachshund

We are all used to seeing red, black and tan, and dapple doxies, but did you know they come in a gorgeous blonde color? The English Cream can be in the long or short coat variations.

#5 – Silver Labrador Retriever

Chocolate, yellow, black, and silver? Yup, the lab actually comes in many colors, including a red as well. The silver lab looks a lot like a chunky weimaraner.

#6 – Long Haired Weimaraner

The long-haired version of the weimi is not allowed in AKC conformation classes, however the United Kennel Club has allowed them since 2010. They still have the pretty silver coat we all love.

#7 – Powder Puff Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is one of the most recognizable breeds, due to it’s unique coat (or lack there of). But, if you saw this dog walking down the street would you think crested? Probably not, you may even think it was a doodle of some kind.

#8 – Smooth Collie

When we picture a collie, most us picture Lassie. But, not only do collies come in colors other than sable, they also come in a smooth or short-haired variation.
