In 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast of the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean leaving a wake of destruction behind it. Like so many others, Nature’s Rescue Wildlife Center in Barnegat, New Jersey, fell victim to Hurricane Sandy’s ferocious devastation. Entire trees were uprooted and strewn across the property, leaving the property unusable until cleared.
The first part of this journey was to start clearing out all the trees and brush. This was not an easy task as these were large mature trees. Special equipment was brought in to help with the extraction; even a chainsaw larger than some volunteers! While Rescue Rebuild was there, they wanted to leave them with something they didn’t have, so next came the construction of twelve 4ft x 12ft raccoon, opossum, squirrel, and skunk cages with roofs, nesting boxes, raised food platforms, ramps, and other animal enrichment. Another issue that Rescue Rebuild wanted to address was storage. Storage is a prime commodity in the shelter world, so the team added a pole barn to house crates, traps, food, etc.
“Watching this group of local volunteers come together in such a time of crisis was inspiring. They heard the plea for help and answered in a way that no one could have imagined. Their dedication is not only evident by their persistent, hard work but also by their willingness to sleep in tents on-site to conserve money and use monies set aside for hotel for the shelter. This community came together for a common purpose and worked together until the job was done. They put this shelter back together piece-by-piece like a puzzle until it was completely in order again.” – Rescue Rebuild
