When Sharon Dooling’s two beloved dogs became the targets of a would-be dognapper, it was her tiny yet brave Chihuahua, Carley, who rose to the occasion and thwarted the criminal’s plans with her alertness and fierce loyalty. This heartwarming and courageous tale not only highlights the unexpected heroism found in the smallest of pets but also underscores the deep bond and protective instincts that exist between pets and their owners. Sharon’s recounting of the incident to CBC News reveals just how close she came to losing one of her cherished canine companions and the pivotal role Carley played in averting the tragedy.

It all began on a seemingly ordinary afternoon. Sharon had let her two dogs, Carley and Silas, outside to enjoy some fresh air. She closed the door, expecting them to play and explore as usual. Little did she know that within seconds, danger would strike.

“I had the door closed for about 30 seconds,” Sharon recalled. “In that brief moment, my Chihuahua, Carley, began barking hysterically. It was a bark I had never heard from her before, one filled with urgency and fear.”

Initially, Sharon was irritated by the noise. Carley was known for her yappy nature, but this time something felt different. Determined to quiet her down, Sharon stepped outside, unaware of the alarming sight that awaited her.

“I went outside to scold Carley for barking,” Sharon recounted. “But as soon as I stepped out, I saw Silas, my other dog, disappearing around the corner of the house. My heart sank.”

At this point, Sharon didn’t fully comprehend the gravity of the situation. She hurried after Silas, her mind racing with confusion and worry. As she rounded the corner, the scene that unfolded before her eyes was nothing short of terrifying.

“There was a man standing there, holding Silas,” Sharon explained. “He had grabbed Silas’s leash and attached his own leash to it. He was dragging Silas down the driveway, away from our home.”

Panic set in as Sharon confronted the man. “What are you doing with my dog?” she demanded, her voice trembling with fear and anger. The man, unfazed, responded, “I’m taking my dog.”

In that moment, Sharon knew she had to act quickly. The man was around 5’8″ and appeared stronger than her. She realized that trying to wrestle Silas from his grip might be futile. Instead, she relied on sheer determination and the adrenaline coursing through her veins.

“It was fight, flight, or freeze – and I chose to fight,” Sharon said. “I ran towards him, panicked, and pushed him in the face. I managed to grab Silas’s leash and pull him away. There was no way I was letting him take my dog.”

The man, startled by Sharon’s bold move, stumbled backward. He hadn’t anticipated such a fierce reaction. As he regained his balance, he turned and sprinted down the street, disappearing into the shadows of the neighborhood.

Sharon, clutching Silas tightly, was left shaken but relieved. She quickly brought both dogs inside, locking the door behind her. Her heart was still pounding, and tears streamed down her face as the reality of what had just happened began to sink in.

Reflecting on the incident, Sharon realized how crucial Carley’s barking had been. “I would never have known if she hadn’t barked,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude. “A friend told me, ‘Never underestimate the power of a yappy Chihuahua.’ And it’s true. Carley is my little guard dog.”

Despite the terrifying ordeal, Sharon couldn’t identify the man. It had been dark, and he wore a hoodie that obscured his face and hair. She reported the incident to the police, but without a clear description, the chances of catching the dognapper seemed slim.
