A routine dog adoption meet-and-greet in Tampa, Florida, quickly escalated into a terrifying and violent confrontation over the weekend, culminating in a woman brandishing a firearm after being denied the chance to adopt a dog. The incident, which occurred in a residential area, has left the local community deeply shaken and raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of individuals involved in animal rescue work. Local law enforcement is now investigating the event, which highlights the unpredictable and sometimes dangerous situations that can arise during what should be straightforward adoption processes.
On a seemingly ordinary day, the Rags to Riches Animal Rescue Group, a dedicated organization focused on rescuing and rehoming animals in need, arranged to meet a potential adopter at a residential area on the 1900 block of Meadowbrook Ave. The group, led by Dominique Amerosa and her mother, regularly conducts these “meet-and-greet” sessions to ensure that the dogs in their care are placed in suitable, loving homes. On this occasion, the focus was on a 2-year-old rescue pug named Bluey, who has special needs due to injuries sustained after being hit by a car.
Bluey, who now relies on a wheelchair for mobility, requires attentive and compassionate care, making it essential for the rescue group to find an adopter who could meet these needs. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a standard part of the adoption process took a dramatic and violent turn, highlighting the unpredictable nature of working in animal rescue.
According to the Tampa Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene around noon in response to a report of an altercation. What they discovered was far from a typical dispute. The potential adopter, whose name has not been released, reportedly became enraged when the rescue group determined that she was not a suitable match for Bluey due to her owning several other dogs. The rescue group’s decision was based on concerns that the woman might not be able to provide the necessary care and attention that Bluey required.
However, the woman did not take the rejection well. According to Amerosa, what started as a tense exchange quickly escalated into physical violence. “When we informed her that the adoption would not be going forward, she refused to hand Bluey back over,” Amerosa recounted. In a desperate attempt to retrieve the dog, Amerosa’s mother tried to take Bluey from the woman, who then elbowed her in the struggle.
The situation took a darker turn when the woman, instead of complying, reportedly retrieved a gun from her vehicle. Amerosa, who was trying to calm the situation, suddenly found herself in immediate danger. “She pointed the gun at the back of my head, forcing me to crouch, and then moved it to my temple,” Amerosa explained, her voice still trembling from the memory. “I didn’t know what was going to happen. I sustained a cut, but I’m not sure what caused it. All I knew was that I had to stay calm.”
In a bid to de-escalate the confrontation, Amerosa began screaming for help, hoping that someone nearby would come to their aid. Her cries were heard by a neighbor who quickly assessed the situation and ran into their house to call 911. “I was terrified, but I knew that making as much noise as possible was our best chance at getting help,” Amerosa said.
With the situation spiraling out of control, Amerosa issued a desperate ultimatum: she threatened to release the woman’s other dogs if Bluey was not returned immediately. The standoff ended when the woman, realizing that the situation was untenable, finally relinquished Bluey by throwing the dog back to Amerosa’s mother. The rescue group members quickly secured Bluey, ensuring the dog’s safety.
However, the danger was not over. Amerosa, trying to document the woman’s license plate for the authorities, began recording a short video. The footage, which lasts only a few seconds, cuts off abruptly as the woman approaches her with a holstered gun. “I heard her cock the gun. No one was near her. She had gone to her car to get it,” Amerosa recalled. “In a matter of seconds, the gun was at the back of my head, then pressed against my temple. Before she left, she even pushed it against my forehead. I thought she might actually pull the trigger.”
The woman eventually left the scene, but not before leaving a lasting impression of fear and trauma on Amerosa and her mother. The police were able to track her down shortly after the incident, but as of now, no charges have been filed. The investigation remains ongoing, with both the Tampa Police Department and the State Attorney’s Office working together to determine the most appropriate course of action.
“That woman is dangerous,” Amerosa stated firmly, urging the authorities to take swift action. “She’s not someone who should be allowed to walk around freely in the community. I hope the police and the State Attorney’s Office do their jobs and bring charges against her.”
The Tampa Police Department confirmed that the woman’s firearm has been taken as evidence. Both Amerosa and her mother have provided detailed statements to the police, as have several witnesses who observed the confrontation. However, the investigation has been complicated by conflicting accounts of what led to the altercation.
As for Bluey, the pug at the center of the incident, she is now safe and back in the care of Rags to Riches Animal Rescue Group. The organization remains committed to finding the right home for Bluey, ensuring that her next potential adopter will be able to provide the specialized care she needs.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable and sometimes dangerous situations that can arise in the field of animal rescue. While the primary goal of groups like Rags to Riches is to find loving homes for animals in need, the safety of the volunteers and the animals themselves is always a top priority.
“This was one of the scariest moments of my life,” Amerosa admitted. “But we’re not going to let it stop us from continuing our work. Bluey deserves a loving home, and we’re going to make sure she finds one.”
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the unsettling reality that a simple act of kindness – rescuing and rehoming a dog – could lead to such a dangerous confrontation. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether justice is served for Amerosa, her mother, and Bluey, and whether the woman responsible will face the consequences of her actions.
