When Aimee the Pit Bull was only six months old, she arrived at Carson Animal Care Center in California. It was clear that she’d been neglected to an extent. Her diseased skin was peeling off in patches, and it looked like she was in a lot of discomfort.

The shelter staff was informed that Aimee was one of the “friendliest” dogs they had ever met. However, it was clear that the loud, anxious barks of the other terrified canines triggered Aimee’s worry. Even after she received treatment for her skin condition, Aimee began to believe that an “ugly” dog like her would never be adopted.

As Aimee’s turn approached on the kill list, the staff began striving harder to ensure that this defeated little girl had a better chance of adoption. They wrapped her in a colorful blanket and took an adorable photo of her for future use on social media. Because people noticed Aimee’s downcast and sorrowful look despite the bright environment, the picture spread swiftly.

Aimee went home with a family that adopted her at the shelter! Her new family has chosen to call her Phoenix, which symbolizes her fresh beginning in life. Phoenix appears to be the happiest girl in this freedom run video posted by the facility, as she leaves the shelter and goes off to her new house.
