There may be nothing stronger than the bond between a Military Working Dog and her handler. Raised and trained to protect and serve, these dogs often save the lives of not just their handler, but dozens of other servicemen and women on tour.
Sgt. Canvas is no exception. She served multiple tours in Iraq with her handler Marine Lance Corporal Russ Moseley, and was trained to sniff out up to 70 different bombs.
“She took a lot of the stress away of being away from home,” Cpl. Moseley tells WTVR CBS 6 News. “It was like having family there.”
Unfortunately, a severe spinal cord injury forced Cpl. Moseley to make a difficult decision – to put her out of the pain she was living with everyday.
“It happened really fast,” says Cpl. Moseley. “She went from being very chipper, very happy, very playful, to being down all the time. One night we went to sleep, woke up, and she could barely left her hind end.”
A Final Ride
The small town of Minden, Louisiana came together last Friday to support the Marine, who earned a Purple Heart in Afghanistan and to pay tribute to his faithful partner one final time.
Members of the Patriot Guard Riders and several other motorcycle groups along with police, gathered to escort Sgt. Canvas to the vet’s office.
RIP Sgt. Canvas. Our hearts are with Cpl. Moseley and his family at this difficult time. We feel all Military Working Dogs deserve such a tribute. What do you think?
