If you read our site a lot, you know that I cover a ton of rescue stories from Detroit, Michigan. They are one of the cities the World Animal Awarness Society (WA2S) travels to frequently to shed light on the large stray dog problem. In fact, the announcement of the city’s first no kill shelter comes just days after WA2S posted a video about the Detroit Animal Control being protested by animal welfare advocates. they are under fire for being overcrowded, poorly run, dirty and having a high kill rate.
Detroit Dog Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue operating in the city, has been saving dogs throughout Detroit since 2011. Since then, they have found home for around 650 dogs. However, because they were not an official shelter, they were not allowed to take in dogs that were surrendered, but not capture the stray living on the streets in the city.
Being certified by the state changes all that. They are now the first (and sadly only) no kill shelter in the Detroit. They have room for up to 30 dogs at their current location.
I think there is a perception that these dogs are somewhat damaged, that they are a problem, that they are bad, and their not,” says Jackie Carlson, a Detroit Dog Rescue Volunteer.
Congratulations to all the hard workers (all volunteer) with the Detroit Dog Rescue. We know this is a BIG deal for all those strays in Detroit. If you want to help, you can donate on their website, become a volunteer, foster, or adopt!
