Hurricane Dorian was an unfortunate situation for many. Sadly, this includes the dogs that were in the Bahamas, especially the ones in shelters without a home. Of all the pets at the Humane Society of Grand Bahama in Freeport, over 120 animals did not survive the flooding and disasters from the hurricane. Staff spent hours in neck deep water, and luckily, were able to save 83 shelter dogs.

These 83 dogs were brought to the H.A.L.O. No-Kill Shelter in Sebastian, Florida. They all had a lot of healing to do, but they were safe from the destruction and that’s what really mattered.

By taking in all of these poor dogs, H.A.L.O. nearly doubled their amount of animals. With the new dogs, they had around 160 animals to care for. However, while this made them busier, they refused to give up on any of the dogs.

Even though the dogs from the Bahamas were safe, there was still a chance that they could have gotten diseases while stranded in the floodwaters. Therefore, they had to remain under a 14-day quarantine to keep the other shelter animals safe.

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort and the Walt Disney World Textile Services wanted to help out these dogs in need. They decided to donate some blankets, towels, and sheets to these dogs.

All the bedding with the quarantined dogs will be disposed of if any diseases are spotted. However, at least the dogs will be comfortable in the meantime.

Disney is really trying to help out the Bahamas as much as possible. Not only are they donating blankets to the dogs, but the Disney cruise lines have been continually delivering food and water to Castaway Cay. From there it is distributed to Great Abaco Island and Moore’s Island. Both of those islands were affected by the hurricane.

Unfortunately, many of the rescued dogs needed serious medical attention. Some of them were found with infections and saltwater burns from Hurricane Dorian’s storm surge. It is estimated that these dogs will need over $15,000 to cover their medical costs.

Not only is Disney trying to help these dogs as much as possible, but Patchington, a clothing company in Vero Beach, held a weekend fundraiser to raise extra money for the dogs. In that fundraiser alone, they raised over $400. H.A.L.O. is also applying for grants to cover the rest.

H.A.L.O. recently held an adoption event. The adoption fees of their dogs were waived to help all their dogs find homes easier. After the event, 35 more dogs had found homes. They will continue to work hard to find homes for the rest.

With so many dogs in need of medical assistance and forever homes, everything helps. Disney and Patchington were very kind to help the dogs in need, and the more help they receive, the better off they will be. For now, the shelter is just very grateful that the dogs are alive and safe from the destruction of the hurricane.
