A dog was found tied to a tree but is now doing well and being looked after, while the owner who left him faces charges. On April 22, a man walking his dog in the Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary in South Windsor, Connecticut, found a dog tied to a tree. The dog was mostly okay, but his eyes were red and his collar was tight, as reported by CT Insider.
A kind person who found the dog called the police, starting an investigation. Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates also offered a $5,000 reward for information that could lead to catching the person who did this.
The dog, named “Kobe” on his collar, was taken to the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter. The shelter shared that Kobe, now called “Obie,” is doing well. He’s been neutered, got his shots, and has a microchip. “His eyes are almost healed, and he is learning manners and personal space,” the shelter said on Facebook. “He is LOVING all the attention from every person that meets him.”
Kobe’s former owner, 26-year-old Janiya Bradford from Manchester, Connecticut, turned herself in, probably because the case got a lot of attention online. “I truly believe that level of aggressiveness from the public kind of forced the suspect to come in here to have a conversation with us about it,” said Sgt. Mark Cleverdon of the South Windsor police to NBC Connecticut. Kaley Curtis, a community service officer, mentioned that it’s rare for someone to admit to abandoning a pet.
Bradford was charged with cruelty to animals and let go on a $5,000 bond. Her court date is set for June 5. Obie will soon be available for adoption, likely on Friday. He needs a home with only women because he doesn’t like men. With so much support, he should find a new home quickly.
