We recently shared the story of Emma Mertens – a small girl in Wisconsin who is fighting cancer with the help of #TeamEmma. Emma absolutely LOVES dogs, and though she doesn’t have one of her own, she enjoys dog sitting for neighbors and spending time with pups whenever she can.

When Emma became sick her parents asked neighbors to send letters from their dogs to put a smile on her face, and word spread quickly across social media. The outpouring of support from dogs (with the help of their owners) was overwhelmingly wonderful, but it got even better.

Earlier this week Emma got a very special visit from some very handsome working dogs! Dozens of different police from around the area sent out dogs from their K9 Units to meet Emma at her home! She got to spend time with about 35 different dogs in one morning – a dream come true for any dog lover!

This incredible show of support from local law enforcement was coordinated by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement K9 Handlers Association and the Hartland Police Department. A handler from the organization mentioned that this was a big day for one lucky K9 who is nearing retirement.

“I also wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce K-9 Sonny, and having one of his last acts of service prior to his retirement, to meet such an inspiring little girl and her family. “

And as a souvenir from her big day, Emma got a team of K9s of her own!

“Attached is a picture of Emma’ Team of Police K9s. She has them lined up listening to the two leaders up front. They are all ready to fight crime and help cheer up other people in the world! It is so good to see her imagination again! Thank you again for all the generosity towards Emma.”

We never run out of great things to say about dogs, but sometimes humans can be really cool too. Way to go, officers.

“There are no words….Pure Joy! Thank you to everyone who took the time to organize and participate in this. Emma is still all smiles! Over 35 different departments and many more K9s and officers. #kindness #TeamEmma

Emma is still fighting and her family is still hoping for a miracle. Keep up with Emma on Facebook and GoFundMe, and leave a picture or two of your dog!
