When a precious senior beagle was brought into the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter in Mississippi, staff members immediately fell in love with his sweet face and gentle personality. The old pup, who was brought in by a Good Samaritan, was found wandering the streets of Mississippi all alone.
Shortly following his arrival at the shelter, the beautiful beagle was given the name Vinny. After a warm bath and a hearty meal, Vinny was evaluated by the shelter veterinary staff to assess his current condition. Unfortunately, it seemed as though Vinny had been on his own for quite a while. Staff at the shelter were concerned that Vinny may have been dumped on the streets.
The medical staff first noted that Vinny had a terrible skin infection with patches of hair loss. His nails were incredibly long and unkempt, making it difficult for him to walk without pain.
Unfortunately, his issues didn’t stop there. Vinny was suffering from a severe heartworm infection and had a dangerous amount of fluid in his lungs. In short, the loving people who had saved Vinny’s life realized the inevitable truth – Vinny was nearing the end of his life.
Though she knew that Vinny was not an ideal candidate for adoption, given his poor health, a rescue volunteer named Ashley made a last-ditch effort to give Vinny a home. Ashley reached out to her friend Rachel who had a house full of love and told Vinny’s story.
Rachel did not hesitate to pick up Vinny from the rescue. She and her family wanted to ensure that he spent his last days comfortable and safe. Rachel’s two children immediately fell in love with the old pup, affectionately calling him their “puppy” and playfully arguing over whose lap he would sit in on the way home.
Vinny died that very same night.
It is heartwarming to know that, before he passed, Vinny was showered with unconditional love. Rachel and her children showered Vinny with hugs, kisses, and the yummiest snacks. He died in a warm, safe home surrounded by people who loved him.
In a comment thread, supporters of the animal shelter on Facebook have expressed their sincere admiration and appreciation for Rachel and her family:
“This story brought tears. It IS sad that the pup died so soon…but it died LOVED. Vinny is at the Rainbow Bridge,” said one user, while another added, “Thank you for saving his sweet soul. You ARE a hero…”
