Let this video be a reminder to you: If you’re ever walking your leashed dog onto an elevator, make sure your pup is with you at all times!
A moment of distraction could have turned to tragedy for one man in his apartment building in Springfield, Missouri.
As the dog owner boarded an elevator with his pup in tow, the pooch got distracted and failed to follow… and the owner wasn’t paying close attention either. This is when something very scary happened.
The doors closed on the leash, and the confused pup looked around for his owner.
Then, as the elevator rose to the fifth floor, the dog was pulled into the air, his body repeatedly banging against the elevator door before he was dropped to the ground again.
As the pup got pulled into mid-air a second time, maintenance supervisor Brian Ussery saw the defenseless dog and acted fast. (Funny enough, he was in the middle of leaving a voicemail.) The handy man wrapped his arms around the pup and broke him free of the leash.
Meanwhile, the frantic dog owner rushed back to the first floor, unsure of what he’d find. Lucky for him, there was a hero in the right place at the right time that day! With all four paws safely back on the ground, the pup was thankfully found to be uninjured by the incident.
When he posted the video, Ussery had no idea that it would receive so much attention. “When I first took the video it was just to show my fiancé. We are both huge dog lovers…Never in a million years did I expect it to be shared and viewed so many times. I posted it as a warning about leashes and elevators,” he said in a story by Fox 2 Now.

This happened at work today. Guy got on the elevator and thought his pup had came in too. Well she didn’t. I hate to know what would have happened if I wasn’t able to break that leash before she got to the top again.
