In the intense and dangerous environment of combat, U.S. military combat dog Layka faced an unimaginable threat. “On the day Layka got shot in May, I immediately felt an urgent need to save her,” Julian recalled, speaking to the camera with evident emotion. “I owe this dog everything from this day forward, with my son, with my mother, with my family… I owe her everything.”

The harrowing incident occurred during a critical mission where Layka and her team were under heavy fire. Despite her severe injuries, Layka managed to subdue the attacker, protecting every soldier on Julian’s team. This selfless act exemplified a level of courage and loyalty that even the most courageous humans might hesitate to perform.

Julian vividly remembers the conflicting emotions he felt during that fateful day. “I felt really bad because I was the one who put her in the building,” he reflected. “But at the same time, I was relieved that I was still alive, and my buddies to my left and right were also still alive.”

Layka’s injuries were life-altering, resulting in the loss of one of her legs. Despite this, her spirit remained unbroken. Julian made the decision to adopt her, a choice that was met with mixed reactions. Some believed Layka’s aggressive training would make her unsuitable for a home environment. However, Julian was resolute in his decision.

“She saved my life, and that’s why I’m here. I owed it to her, and that’s why I fought so hard to adopt her, even when people were saying ‘she’s too aggressive.’ These dogs deserve good homes,” Julian stated firmly. His mission extended beyond just giving Layka a home; he aimed to show the world that military dogs, with proper care and love, could transition to family life.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of Layka’s new life was her immediate bond with Julian’s one-year-old son, Liam. Julian shared a touching story from their first day together at home. “The first time I brought her home, my son was just over one year old at the time,” Julian recounted. “She went right over to Liam, submitted, and lay on her back. My son climbed on top of her chest, grabbed her ears, and put his hand in her mouth, and she didn’t react aggressively. She just lay there, accepting it all.”

This instant connection was a testament to Layka’s gentle nature and her ability to adapt to a loving home environment, dispelling the myths about her supposed aggression.

Although they no longer see active combat, Julian ensures Layka gets plenty of exercise and training to channel her energy positively. “If you bring them into a home environment, they will adapt to that environment, because all animals learn to adapt and survive,” Julian explained. He added, “If the dogs have served our country, then the government owes it to them to care for them.”

Julian’s dedication to Layka’s well-being is unwavering. He believes that these dogs, who have given so much in service, deserve to live out their lives in comfort and happiness.

Julian’s story with Layka extends beyond their personal bond; it’s a mission to change perceptions about military working dogs. He advocates for their right to be treated with the same respect and care as human veterans. “These dogs have put their lives on the line, just like we have. They deserve to be treated with dignity and given the chance to live in a loving home,” he passionately stated.

Julian and Layka’s journey is ongoing. They continue to navigate the challenges and joys of their new life together. Layka’s presence in Julian’s home has brought a new sense of purpose and joy to his family. Her story is a powerful testament to the bond between a soldier and his loyal dog, highlighting the incredible bravery, loyalty, and adaptability of military working dogs.
