And I’m guessing the dog is sad because he misses his family. Burt kept looking outside, probably waiting for his family to come back. The little kid felt bad for the sad dog, so he decided to keep him company, pet him, and comfort him. You can even see that he talks to the dog too! What a loving little boy!
