In a quiet neighborhood in Oregon, a vigilant neighbor couldn’t ignore the distressing sight of a husky suffering from apparent neglect next door. This poor husky seemed to have been neglected for years, confined to the backyard with no signs of interaction, love, or proper care. The neighbor observed the dog’s sad, forlorn eyes and matted fur, clear indicators of a lack of grooming and attention. She never saw the dog leave the yard or enter the house, reinforcing her concerns about the husky’s well-being. Determined to help, she decided to take action.

Distressed by the sight of the neglected husky, she decided to take action. She reached out to Lee Asher of The Asher House for help with the husky’s dire situation. The Asher House is a renowned non-profit animal sanctuary dedicated to rescuing neglected or unwanted animals. Lee Asher, the founder, travels across cities and states, saving animals one at a time by providing them with a safe, loving environment.

Upon receiving the call, Lee didn’t hesitate. He drove to the location and gathered all the information about the dog from the concerned neighbor. She filled him in on the details, describing how Joey, the husky, had never been seen outside the fenced backyard. She mentioned that Joey was only fed because she threw food over the fence, ensuring he wouldn’t starve. Despite her attempts to talk to the owner, they were reluctant to give Joey up without any clear reason.

Lee knew he had to act quickly. He prepared some treats and a leash, hoping to coax Joey out of the yard. His plan was to take Joey to a groomer to get rid of the fleas and clean him up. However, getting Joey out wasn’t easy. Joey displayed a mix of aggression and playfulness, a common trait in neglected dogs who crave attention but are also fearful. Fortunately, Lee’s expertise and calm demeanor helped manage the situation.

Once Joey was out of the backyard, his transformation began. His curiosity was evident as he explored the surroundings. Lee noted, “The front of your house isn’t the most fascinating part for the dog, right? (But) to him, it’s a whole new world here.” Joey’s eyes lit up as he took in the sights, sounds, and smells of the outside world, something he had been deprived of for so long.

As they walked away, hope filled their hearts. The concerned neighbor couldn’t hold back her tears of joy, knowing that Joey’s life was about to change for the better. However, the journey wasn’t over yet. It took two weeks of persistent efforts to convince the owner to finally give Joey up to The Asher House. Lee’s dedication and unwavering commitment to Joey’s well-being paid off.

Once Joey was officially part of The Asher House, his new life began. Lee brought Joey home, where he was enveloped in the love and care he had always deserved. Joey was taken to a training facility to acclimate him to other dogs, a crucial step in his rehabilitation. He learned to interact with other dogs, understanding that he was now part of a bigger family.

Lee also introduced Joey to his own dogs, known as The Pack. This gradual introduction was essential in ensuring Joey felt safe and accepted in his new environment. Joey’s progress was remarkable. His once matted fur was now clean and shiny, his eyes bright with joy. The transformation was a testament to the power of love and proper care.
