Maya and her brother spent two years living in a dog meat cage in South Korea. Before the pair were sold for meat, Korean K9 Rescue negotiated a rate with the man selling the dogs. The rescue group took them to a local shelter, where they waited an entire year for financial sponsorship in the United States.
Once enough money was raised for the pups; they were flown to New York to attend an adoption event. That is when Mandy came into Maya’s life and knew that the sweet pup with a tragic past belonged with her. She adopted her that same day! Maya was, understandably, timid.
After living her entire life in a cage, everything overwhelmed her. Mandy set Maya up in a bedroom where she felt safe. Over time, she walked over the door’s threshold and checked out her family as they watched TV. But she had never seen a TV before, which scared her even more! So she’d retreat back into the bedroom. It took Maya an entire year before she was ready to face the world.
When the dog adjusted, Mandy took her out back to introduce her to the yard. Maya’s paws touched the grass and she went wild with happiness. She “zoomied” so fast that “her eyes looked like they were just going to burst!”
